Our Story

  • EAST MEETS WEST ALLIANCE

    art that brings differences together
a new window into contemporary Art from our shores and further afield.
  • Who We Are

We are two young women passionate by art and culture.

Catherine is a Belgian grown up from an art gallery familly "Art Thema" - A place where art matters since 1985, specialized in European Contemporary Art.  She has left Brussels 15 years ago to live in France (Paris, Aix-en -Provence) and has settled down in the Calanques next to Mareille.

Shuo is a Chinese from Beijing, specialized in Contemporary Chinese Art and marketing. She lived in Europe over 15 years, first based in France, then settled down in Brussels.

We have the same view on inner true hapiness and sincere joy. We can say that our souls and hearts are aligned to the same values and follow the same kind of dreams. We share the same taste for explorations and adventures. Our eyes and minds wide opened to the beauty of the world. Not only the one we see,..rather the one we feel. Remember what Antoine de Saint Exupery said in one of our favorite book- Le Petit Prince -  "One can only see with the heart, what is essential is invisible for the eyes."

We believe that we met at the right time!  Do you have ever heard of "serendipity"? When an event occurs by chance in a happy or beneficial way... That is what happenend for us! Our obstination to work in and for "art", crossing bridges between differents cultures brought us together. The travellers and lovers we are commit themselves to share with others their passion and expertise.  We have high expectations for the world of art fusion of East and West that we keep creating, inspiring sharing with all others. We carry within us traditions from our parents and countries, but aren’t afraid to redefine them into something more international we embrace.

Art Thema - A place where Art matters since 1985

It is widely known for its previous galleries, in the Sablon corner first, Knokke, Paris and  more recently in its famous exhibition house that was up to 1.000m2, split in 5 floors at 51 Rue de la Madeleine in Brussels.

The art compagny ranks different activities such as Art promotion, Artist agent, Artistic and Cultural Events, and Art financing through tailor-made solutions.

It is also the exclusive dealer worldwide of the famous Belgian artist René Julien.

For 36 years Art Thema has also addressed companies and liberal professions by way of advices in management of patrimonies and with financial solutions and fiscal optimizations.

Catherine - the successor of the Western Art of "Art Thema"

Art Thema is a family run business which has been able to transmit its feelings and passion for Art from one generation to another convinced as it is that the diffusion and acquisition of an Art work remains  an hedonistic, necessary and precious act that has to be perpetuated in time.

The heart of the activity of Art Thema remains the promotion of living European artists and the commercialization of Art at its “right value”.  Meanwhile, Catherine keeping bringing more new art and brilliant artists on contemporary sculpture, installation, street art and furniture from Europe!

Outside these walls, Art Thema creates links and partnerships to illuminate the works of its artists in order to open up to sharing, communicating and to new promising synergies elsewhere.

Shuo - The New Eastern Art from "HéYī"

While tradition is gradually disappearing, and people’s lives are filled with material and anxiety in the modern society, there is such a new generation of Asian artists reborning the tradition, breaking boundaries and limitations, creating new scenes between east and west, human and nature. They bring Asian beauty back to a fresh life and give new souls. These artwork are inspired by ancient philosophy, leading people away from the world’s vulgarity, and return to simplicity and freedom. This is why I call my gallery "HéYī" meaning integration.

Ink is my preferred media as a carrier of the Asian artist’s thoughts over 2,000 years. No medium can express and inherit better Asian art into various forms, like painting, calligraphy, screen print ceramic art, etc. The trajectory of brush and ink, the combination possiblity of ink and water are exactly the most changeable, uncontrollable, and free, giving unlimited potential to the innovation of contemporary Asian art.

I grew up in Beijing and Shanghai, in an environment full of history and international tolerance. Affected by my father’s former assignment in Paris, I also flew to France when I was young to continue my studies. Traveled and lived in Europe for 15 years, finally I’m settled in Brussels. Being able to meet different people and understand different cultures is the greatest fortune for me.

At the same time, the Eastern world especially China, has undergone earth-shaking changes, e.g. more open-minded spirit, and new international generations of artists. I feel meaningful to become such a bridge, not only to share the real beauty and culture of “NEW ASIA”, to inspire more people to return to the soul, but also to support more talented Asian artists to continue their ideals and carry forward the tradition.
